Research

In order to provide accurate and pertinent context to the transcriptions, the class also did extensive research into the people and places mentioned in the letters.

Census

The United States conduct censuses in order to determine population size and density. These censuses are available to the public, and were of great importance in determining where Harry, Clara, and others were, and when. These censuses also detail occupations and familial relations.

Military Records

Several of the men in the Walmer-Reed family served in the Union army during the Civil War.

Last Will and Testaments

Harry Bare had a will leaving everything to his wife Clara. Harry Walmer's son, Reed Walmer, was the executor of the will.

Death Certificates
