Clara Walmer Letters

In an age of texts, emails, and phones, letters from home are rare. In the mid-19th century, before the advent of these technologies, handwritten letters were the primary means of communication. The letters of this collection are between Harry Bare, born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and Clara Walmer, from Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. Harry and Clara used their letters to remain in contact with one another through what was likely their courtship.

Emma Reed Letters

While on his travels, William Reed was sure to often write to his wife, Emma. The three letters span from March 2, 1868 to June 6, 1870. Within this time, we read about two of Emma’s pregnancies, the caregiving of plants, Paris Cakes, sickness, and the naming of a newborn daughter. From William’s letters, readers can get a sense of his lively sense of humor and admiration for his wife.
