Registration Cards

Below we have three military registration cards from the Balarzs brothers, excluding Fred who was too young to fight in World War II.

Ernest Draft Card pt 2.jpg

This is Ernest Balarzs' Registration Card from 1942. This shows us that he was a student before enlisting in the military and was living in Kimbal, West Virginia at the time. The Registrar's Report that went with the Card shows his approximate height and weight along with other physical markers such as complexion and race. This can be useful in helping to picture the people we are researching when pictures of them do not exist or have not been located yet.

This is the Registration Card and Report for Bela Balarzs. Something interesting to note is the date that he registered. This date, October 16, 1940 is the same date that is on Steve's Report, indicating they registered on the same day. Bela's Card shows us where he was born (Cleveland, Ohio), something that differed for most of the Balarzs siblings. This information helps to pinpoint where Sigmond and Barbara Balarzs lived after immigrating to the US and starting their family.

Steve Balarzs' Registration Card and Report show is unique in that we have no other evidence that he served in World War II or otherwise in the United States military. Even according to an oral account given by a living family member, Steve never served. Another interesting piece of information is that his card shows that he was a coal miner (Koppers Coal Co.), an occupation he shared with his father and brother, Bela. However, Bela is listed as working at another coal company, the Peerless Coal & Coke Co.
